eNewsletter two - RSS Review

rss logoEven though I don’t believe the eNewsletter subscription is working, I decided to go ahead and write another weekend recap anyway.

It’s been a full week here at 170spoons.com. It’s been “RSS Week”! I hope that this has been a helpful exercise for you in understanding what this is all about. Let me recap the week for us…

First and foremost, don’t worry about what RSS is. In the big picture for most people it just doesn’t matter. What does matter is what it does for us and how we can use it well.

The reason we want to take a look at RSS is because it helps us stay connected with website updates. It’s a real time-waster to go to all of your favorite websites just to find out there is nothing new there. So why not have one place to go to get all of your updates like an email inbox?

You can indeed! What we need is a RSS reader like Google Reader in order to collect all the updates into one place. There are plenty of other options for reading web updates like other websites, programs you can download, or add-ons to your browser and email programs. But my favorite (and I think easiest to use) is the free website Google Reader.

Once you have items in your reader, it’s time to take your effectiveness one step up by organizing all your updates by understanding some tricks in Google Reader. This makes it so much easier to zip through all of your updates and even allows you subscribe to more sites to monitor easily.

Then we wrapped up the week with several websites to subscribe to and put in your reader.

I hope this hasn’t been an intimidating process. My intention is to try and take what may seem like a complicated technology and show that with just a little work, you can make your online reading much easier and effective!
