Open Several Sites at Once with Open All in Tabs

WHY? An easy shortcut to start the day with your most used websites.

open all tabsThere is a nifty little trick that I use every day when I open my browser that helps me get a good start to my day online.

If you open any bookmark folder in Firefox you will see at the bottom of the list the words “open all in tabs”. When you click it, each bookmark you have in that folder will open each in its own tab inside Firefox.

The result looks something like the following graphic making it easy to navigate from one site to another quickly and efficiently:

open tabs

Important Note: No matter how many sites you currently have open when you use the “Open All in Tabs” option, all current tabs are closed and replaced by the ones in the folder.

My favorite time to use this trick is first thing in the morning. I already have a folder saved in my bookmarks with the 5 websites I want to open to start the day. For me they are:

Everyone will have their own favorite sites to put in their folder. Pick a few and give it a shot.

What are your “must start with” websites for the day?

I have weather on my dashboard, so I don’t have to actually visit a website to check that.

Google Reader is my main one. I don’t have to do an e-mail one because I have Outlook. And my weather is on my browser window in Firefox on the bottom right corner. I love that feature! It tells me what the current weather is and the forecast for the day.

I have the weather installed as a firefox plugin, but I really like simpleweather.com as a clean site. Besides, here in Orlando the weather doesn’t change much!

You can accomplish the same thing by opening the pages you want in different tabs and then go to Tools >> Options >>Main and click on “Use current pages”.

Now when you open your browser those pages will automatically become your “Home” pages. Of course you can always go back to them by clicking your “Home” button.

I have Gmail, Greader, Gcalendar as my home pages.

    The above is for Firefox.

For IE you do the same thing except there’s no “Pages” button, so you have to type each address (copy/paste) in a separate line. Then it will open them in their own tab as well.

@PaulF : I’ve tried that before and didn’t care for it as much. I found having one page to load on opening my browser is faster and cleaner. Then when I desire, I’ll open more tabs. This way it’s my option.
